What you need

Steps

  1. Butter the outsides

A knife spreading butter on one of two slices of bread

Spread soft butter right to the edges on one side of each slice. The buttered sides will go on the outside.

    Tip: edge to edge

  2. Build the sandwich

A buttered slice being lowered onto bread covered with cheese

Lay one slice butter-side down, cover it with cheese, then top it with the other slice butter-side up.

    Tip: butter faces out

  3. Cook side one on low

A spatula gently pressing a sandwich in a pan

Put it in a pan over medium-low heat. Press gently with the spatula and cook until the bottom is golden brown.

Tip: low heat = melty middle

  4. Flip and finish

A spatula flipping a golden sandwich in the air

Flip it over and cook the second side until golden and the cheese has fully melted.

    Tip: one confident flip

  5. Rest, then cut

Two grilled cheese halves pulled apart with stretchy melted cheese

Let it sit for 1 minute so the cheese doesn’t all run out, then cut it corner to corner.

    Tip: look at that stretch!
